TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.
The remarks made by Mr W. B. Cliermells at' the meeting of the, Masterton > Chamber of (Commerceyestejrday Were very much to the point. The necessity for exercising foresight in the laying off of public thoroughfares cannot be too strong-, ly emphasised: 1 In this connection, the poll which is about to be'taken on!the proposal to form a cozmecting street between Queen and Chapel Streets is of considerable public importance. It affects, not only one portion of the town, but the wholeof the community, and :it..should .at once ; appeal to those who have at heart, the progress of the borough. The cost of making this thoroughfare— which, is urgently required—;" will" become, greater as '.population' increases, and" to defer its' con-"' ■struction on the score of expense would be a retrograde step. Masterton is not as dead and dull as some would suppose. It possesses a large number of people who have confidence in its future, and hoves every progressive ratepayer to i take a wide view of measures in-J troduced for the improvement of' the town, and to give them their practical sympathy and support. |
