DISTRICT NEWS.

CARTERTON.

Mr C. M. Whyte, of the local Post Office staff, left here yesterday on a fortnight's holiday trip to Rotorua. There was a large and representative gathering of relatives at the funeral of the late Mrs T. W. Foster yesterday afternoon, the mortal remains being laid to rest in the Clareville cemetery. The cortege included a

number of members of the Carterton

and Masterton Tents of the Independent Order of Rechabites, Bros. W. H. Partridge, F.'E. Tyler, E. King, and W. H. Whyte, of the Carterton Tent, carrying out the duties of pall-bearers. The Rev. C. H. Standage, of the Methodist Church, conducted a short service at the residence, and a service at the graveside. Many beautiful floral tributes of sympathy were placed upon the casket, including a handsome artificial wreath from the officers and brethern of the 1.0. R. Lodge. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family, in their loss of a kind and devoted wife and mother. A very pleasant dance was held at Clareville last evening, when there was a splendid attendance. The floor was in capital order, and Messrs W. B Allen and C. Reid carried out the duties of M.'sC.

The small bridge across the road near Mr C. Diamond's residence at South Carterton, gave.way to the strain of a traction engine on Wednesday/ The County Council staff effected the necessary repairs yesterday. The local railway staff are at present kept busy with the loading of grain, a Rood deal being shioned from here at the present time. Most of it is being hauled by traction engine.

The roads in the district are beginning to show the effects of the want of j rain. In some places they have broken J up considerably. i The annunl meeting of the South!
