MR JOHN STEVENS' HOUSE DE-

STROYED

PALMERSTON N., Last Night

About four o'clock this afternoon, while Mr John Stevens, late M.P., for Mariawatu, was 'enjoying a cigar-on-the verandah of his residence, Somerset House, a£ Bulls, and his daughters. Miss Ethel and Nurse Hilda Stevens' (recently arrived from England) were within, Mr Stevens noticed a smell of burning, and it was discovered that one of the upstair rooms was on fire. All that could he saved was a piano and couch from the drawing room, which opened on to the verandah, and some hooks and papers. It is feared that Mr Stevens' valuable collection of old documents and papers on native and district history have boon wholly destroyed. All his personal effects were destroyed. The building was a fine one. Tt was originally erected forty years ago by Mr John Heatou.- For years it was the finest residence in the , district. Mr Stevens acquired the pro- ! perty some thirty years ago, and recently addedto it. The insurance is £6OO on the building and £3OO on the I furniture.
