MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

THE ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report of the Engineer (Mr 1). McLachlan) was read at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday:—

OPAKI RIDING.—

Waingawa to Camp and Branch Roads. —Contract No. 252, getting, carting, and spreading 1000 cub. yds. of metal for repairs.—The contractor commenced operations on Dorset's Road, where 120 cub. yds. were laid in repairing ruts. Ho is now engaged in working from the Mauriceville boundary side. Pairau Swamp Road and Loop-line. —Contract No. 240. —The above work is satisfactorily completed. Waipona Northern Approach.—Contract No. 238: 26 chains of formation. —The contractors are still making fair progress with their contract. They are now employed on the southern I end of their work, where material is very favourably obtained. Northern Approach.—Contract I'*o. 237 : Building two ; bridges.—The cc •- ' tractor is, conducting operations in the southern stream, and has the formation of two of the centre, piers in place carried above low water level. In this branch of the stream the water has been less difficult to cope with, and better progress may now be expected. Matahiwi Estate Road.—As directed I have inspected the newly constructed branch road of dne mile. The road is generally constructed 15ft wide, and is well graded. With the exception of two short lengths of flat the road ' traverses principally a dry formation. There are two streams bridged with 40ft and 30ft span platform bridges built of a substantial charaqter. There, are two minor defects in the formation • which tire contractor undertook to ■ remedy. The work in the main has: been well executed. A contract has been prepared and advertised to close to-day' (Tuesday) for the annual metal repairs (875 cub. yds.) to the Matahiwi and Branch roads. Mr A. McLeod has tendered £5 as a. contribution towards the upkeep of the Matahiwi Road. Black Creek Road.—Contract No. » 249: Building a 27ft span bridge.—The contractor reports that he is unable to get the timber on to the ground before the early part of next month. He undertakes to then push the work for- ' ;,vard. .Tit WHITI RIDING , The re-decking of the Te Whiti , Bridge has been completed. ; Weraiti-Fernyhurst 'Road.— Con- , tract No. 246: 178.1 chains of metalling.—Approximately one mile of the metal has been laid. The contractor has seven teams engaged, . and fair headway is now being made. RANGITUMAU RIDING Road. j —Contract No. 244: Metalling 90 chains of road.— This contract has* been taken off the contractor's hands. The 150 cub. yds. of metal repairs, mentioned in my last report, have been duly finished. WAINUIORU RIDING.—

Brancepeth Road.—Contract No. 274: Re-metalling 60 chainsof road.— TEe above contract is completed. An additional 17 chains o,f road has become especially weak, so I deem it sufficiently urgent to extend the metalling for that length. This will be a claimonnextyear's.revenue. . Blairlogie-Ea«t ,Coast Road. —Con-tract-No. ' 243: Getting, carting and I spreading 1270 yds., of metal This contract will be out of hand in I about a week's tima. Contract No. 241: Delivering 1500 cub. yds. of metal for repairs.—The contractor lias yet a month's work to complete. j UPPKR TAUERU RIDING.—

Mangarai Road.—Contract No. 248: Forming find eulveting 41.36 chains ofdray 1 road. v This work lia-s been in progress for the last three weeks. Te OrQ OixSßideford Road.—The. workof "replacirig two' platform .toidgesby.reinforced concrete pipes and embankments on Wrigley's Plat will be* finished ibis week. The metal repairs ito the northern' section . of the* aboye 'roads also repairs ; to the.metalled sec-, tion of the Maungrapurapimi Road should be completed within the next week.

Contract No. 254 : 90 cub. yds..of ; metal repairs, let on the 18th ultimo. —This>contract has not been commen-: sed. The contractors inform me that they will proceed vigorously with the woi;k at" the end of this week. ' a|predton riding.— . Alf redton-Weber Road.— Contract No. 245: Delivering 900 cub. yds. of metal for repairs.—The contractor is ' finished the northern end of his con- ' tract. ' ■ .

Tawataia 'to Alfredton Section,— Contract No. 242: 890 cub. yds. of metal for repairs.—The contractor reports that he is finishing work today (Tuesday). T have arranged with him while on the ground to,deliver 400 cub. yds. on the Castle Hill Road at.2s 9d per yard, being the.allocation for-the repairs on this road.
