EMPIRE MUSICAL FESTIVALS.

Mr Hugo Gorlitz, sole representative of Dr Charles Harriss, the promoter iichd director of the world's tour of the Great Sheffield Choir of 120 ladies arid eighty gentlemen, was in Masterton on Saturday, and met several musical ladie-s and gen-, tlemen at Mr CLaughton's house, . and after being introduced by Mr Purcell Webb, discussed the , prospects of lorrnmg an influential com-

raittee of ladies and gentlemen to organise an excursion to Wellington for the- purpose of attending the musical festivals there, which take plaea on Juno 29th and 30th and

July Ist, at the Town Hall, Wellington, when fsie following programme will be given:— June 29th, "The : •Dream of Gerontras"; June 30th, "Blessed Pair, of Sirens," by Sir Hubert Parry, "Parr," by Dr Charles Harirss, and "Sing Ye," ■by Bach; July Ist, "Elijah," when three hundred picked Voices of the Wellington choirs will assist the Sheffield Choir. On July Ist a matinee will also be given, when a miscellaneous programme of Empire miusic will be put 'forth. If a sufficient number of residents are secured! to go to Wellington, the Government will grant .special excursion rates, and possibly a special ■train for the, return journey. It is hoped .that a strong maisical committee will bo organised to accomplish the above. Mr Gorlitz stated that Dr Harriss' work is the outcome of ten years' hard toil; and that lie has already spent £IO,OOO of his o.wn imoney in preliminary work, and it will cost him £30,000 for fares and £20,000 for other expenses, and it will be an, utter impossibility to real-, ise such an amount. But he does all this in the spirit of Imperialism and mjusica'l reciprocity. Mr Gorlitz read a letter which arrived the day before,, for Dr Harris, from the Lord Chamberlain, Earl Cai-rington, which stated:— "The King is graciously pleased to consent to patronise Dr Harriss' first Musical Festival of the Empire."
