BACON WORKS AT WAINGAWA.

Sir Corrigan, a Director of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company,

i Limited, who has been- engaged in [ the Bush district placing shares in , the new Bacon Company, returned 1 yesterday, with the pleasing intelli- | gence that he had placed' the requisite number of shares to warrant the Company in proceeding to erect the necessary buildings and plant, and starting operations. The plans are now being prepared, and tenders will be called immediately. If all goes well the factory will be completed and ready to start operations in September next, at which date the dairy companies will re-open for the season. The history of Bacon Companies in past lias not been a record of isuccesses, but quite the contrary. It would! be difficult to state the reason for the failures. It cannot all be put down to faulty management. A great deal of blame lay on the shoulders of the farmers, who did not pay the necessary at-

tention to the breeding and feeding of pigs. With the advent of the pasteuriser there-is an entire change in the quality or the food supplied < to pigs, skim milk- and whey being pasteurised aaid greatly improved in their feeding valrae. The danger of tuberculosis, which was formerly prevalent, is ; ailmost entirely removed by this system of treating the food. In addition, to improved feeding there is a decided advance in the methods of killing and curing. These, with the advantages of the freezing chambers at Wainga.wa, give every promise of the new bacon works proving a financial success, I and . thus benefit the farmers | throughout; the district.
