STATEMENTS BY MR GREIGG

[By Telegraph—Press association.]

■ASHBURTON, Last Night. At a banquet tendered to Mr John Grieigg la ■- night, on the eve of his departure on a visit to the Old -Country, the Minister of Agriculture, iii replying to a toast to agricultural and pastoral interests, touched on a variety of subject; l , and outlined the work of various (branches of the Agricultural Department. Referring to th© necessity of scientific tests-of dairy herds, Mr MacKerizie acknowledged that quite, half tils: cow's in the coun/try were not paying the cost of their feed. The tests' which the Department made at Dalefield ishowiod that 22 of the 7 best cows produced more t-han 38 xsf the; oporest in one herd; and in another case 21 of the best produced more than 4.5 of the poorest. Regarding the pig industry, if the Department succeeded in bringing our herds up to. the necessary standard, there were undoubtedly great prospects for a good trade. The world's pig herds had gone down by eight millions, and consequently ithere was an increasing great demand for pork. Recent Departmental tests showed (that out of 222 pigis fed upon, pasteurised s>kim milk and whey,' only two' were affected! by disease, whereas those otherwise fed showed that out of 381 tested, 17 & were wrong. 1
