The death is announced by cable of Lady Brooke, widow of a former Governor of Westralia. Mi- J. W. Cochrane, land agent, who has been on a visit to Masterton, returned to To Kuiti yesterday. Mr C. E. Daniell, of Masterton, who has been attending the Methodist Conference in Christehurch, retarnei' to his home on Tuesday night. The Hon. T. Maekenzio is to be entertained at a social by his Taicri constituents next week. A Sydney cable states that Prince Leopold has quite recovered from his recent illness. The death is announced of Signor Antonio Fogazzaro, the well-known Italian litterateur. Mr H. D. Bedford, M.A., has commenced his No-License campaign in the Wairarapa electorate, and is meeting with a cordial reception. A visitor to New Zealand during the coming year will be Viscount Campden, eldest son of the third Earl of Gainsborough.
Mr Lys, formerly steward of the Ruahine Club, left Dannevirke yesterday to take over the proprietorship of the Makuri Hotel.
Mrs E. Thompson, wife of , Mr E. Thompson, of Carterton, and daughter of the late Mr Thomas Moffatt, one of the early settlers of the Wairarapa,' died in Wellington on Tuesday.
Mr J. F. McMahon was in Masterton yesterday, making arrangements for the presentation in the Town Hall on Saturday uight of the living picture production of "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Circus."
Mr John Stanger. sen., an old settlor of Rangitata. Canterbury, died there on Friday morning last, aged 35 vears. The deceased was born at Bii'sav. Orkney, N. 8., and came to the colonies at the time of tho Victorian gold rush.
Mr Percy Smith and Mr Alfred Elkiris, who ore in t-lio employ of Messrs T. Wagg and Co.. and are about to join tho. P. Campbell,"for the past seven years manager in New Zealand of the Massey- Harris Companv, who leaves to-morrow for Auckland en route for. Canada. In. acknowledging-the .gift, Mr Campbell paid a high tribute to the workmanship and quality of New Zealand manufactured implements.
The.Dominion says it is the intention of Dr. Bell, the retiring Director of the Geological-Survey Department, to set up a private mining practice tn London. He will have with him Mr Fraser, mining geologist, one of tEe principal members of his staff, and his secretary,. Mr P. ClarEe, will also go with him to undertake the secretarial work.
Many old Mastertonians will "•ygre.t to hear of the death of Mrs Job Yjlo, relict of the late Mr Job Vile nnd mother of Mr Arthur H. Yile of this town, which occurred at Pukentii. Bulls, at an early hour yesterday morning. The cause of death was heart' failure and hemorrhage nf ihe lungs. The deceased lady, who was, nxty-four years of age, had been visiting her relations and frienls in rbp Wairarapa only a few weeks back, and was on her way to her home in Wanganui wTien she became ill. A native of Lincolnshire, England, she came to New Zealand with her parents (Mr and Mrs John Itayner), who settled at Taita, in.the early fifties. For many yeaTS she was resident at Masterton, and afterwards Hve3 at Pahiatua, Hastings, Bulls, and Wanganui. , She leaves a grown-up family of eleven sons and one daughter. The late M?s Vile was a sister of the late Mr Jolfli Rayner, of tlie Taratahi, of Mrs Edwin Johnson, of Masterton, and Mrs R. A. Nicholls, of Bideford. The fun- [ oral will take place at Pahiatua at I 2.30 p.m. on Friday.
