JUDGING. The following is the system of marking adopted by Dr. Bradshaw, of Christchurch,, for judging at musical competitions Pianoforte playing. —Technical correctness of notes, time and pace, 10; tone, quality and touch (and for the duet "balance"), 10 ; attack, phrasing, use of pedal, 10; general effect and expression, 20; maximum, 50. Violin playing.—Technical correctness of notes, time and pace, 10.; tone, quality nnd intonation, 10; bowing and phrasing, 10, expression and general effect, 20; maximum, 50. Solo Singing.—Technical correctness of notes, time and pace, 10; tone, quality and intonation, 10;. distinctness of words, pronunciation and enunciation, 10; attack and. phrasing', 10; expression and general effect, 20; maximum, 60. For duet singing the marking is the same as solos, but add the words "blend" and "ballance" to the second line (tone, quality, etc.). For chorus singing the marking is the same as for ducts. For quartette singing add to duet marking "absolute" maintenance of pitch, 10 marks (total 70). 1 Brass. Band Solo Instruments.— Technical correctness of notes, time and pace, 10; tone, quality, and in■tonation, 10; phrasing and attack, 10 ; expression and general effect, 20; maximum, 50. For brass guartette Add "blend and balance" to second line (tone, quality, etc.) of above.
