TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.")

I The nominations received for the Masterton meeting, which average eighteen for thirteen events, are decidedly satisfactory, and a really good meeting should result. Quality as well as quantity is well represented in the list, and there should be some keen contests at the fixture'. I The Racing Commission lias started its work, and this week will inspect the racecourses between Wanganui and' New Plymouth. Apparently, the Commission intends- to do its work thoroughly, and it would appear that those Clubs j which have poor buildings arid racing tracks will suffer in the alloca- ] tion of permits. I The course at Wanganui, which J is of a sandy nature, became somewhat cut up on Thursday, and that day's running was consequently altered in the concluding running, the light weight brigade showing to advantage. Humming Bird, 6&t 71b, accounted for a small field in the Autumn 1 Handicap, the useful St. Felix filling second place. Jackpin was well backed lor .the Matarawa Hack,, and won from the consistent Con the Shaughraun. The Multiform cplt Vice-Admiral proved victorious in the Jackson Stakes. 'Ho is. raced by Messrs Stead Bros, and G. D. Greenwood,. and was bracketed in the totalisator -with Peir rene, owned by the latter. Hydrant, who is well .up in years, created a surprise by winning the Fordlell Hurdles. One of the best performances registered, this season was that of Lady Medallist in the Wanganui Stakes.. Carrying the welter weight of 9st 101b, and eonceding as much as 431bs in weight to good performers, the St. Alwyne mare covered herself with glory by accounting for the opposition in such style'as- to justify the opinion of those who consider her the best mare racing in the Dominion. On Friday next Lady Medallist is to be taken over to' Australia, where she will be pitted against the best, including Comedy King, Trafalgar, Blairgour, and. Alawa. The Dannevirke meeting opens on Wednesday next. There is every : promise of a, successful gathering, and as'.the course is in fine order' after the recent rain the racing is sure to be well worth witnessing. , Wairarapa will be represented by a large number of sportsmen, many of whom will be prepared to find district horses running well forward. , The weights for the Napier Park meeting .should be well received by owners and'-trainers, and good ace-; eptances should result. The principal event, the Napier Cup, of a mile and a quarter, will bring out a nice field. San dstr earn 9st and Kopu Bst 111b, are hardly at their best just now, having been spelled after the ,New Year, racing.' Sir Tristram, Bst 41b, is: nicely placed, and the same "remark applies to Parable and , Rauparaha Bst, Woodhey; 7st 131b, ,and Fort William 7st 121b. - Of those lower down in- the weights, Vi 7st Blb, and Julian 6st 91b, appear, to be the best treated. The running of some of these' candidates at Dannevirke may. throw more light on their chances at Napier Park. Several ■■'brilliant two-year-olds are engaged in the Sapling Stakes, including Bootle, Altear, Royal Scotch, War Scare, and Gold Bond. The other events will provide keen racing, and the class of horses engaged justifies the Club ' in expecting a most 'Successful meeting.
