A deputation from' the Masterto'n Chamber of Commerce, . consisting of Messrs G. C. Summerell, A. Henderson, and W. B. OhenneUs "waited on the Borough Council last evening in connection, with the opening up of a street from Queen Street to Chapel Street, adjacent to the property of Messrs Ogilvy and Sons. Mr Summerel'Ji stated that the Council of \the Chamber of Commerce had found that the 'matter of rating a special area. was.too heavy an itejrf for a limited area to bear. They itllierefore asked -the Borough Council to submit the matter to a poll of the whole of the ratepayers at the next municipal election. The Mayor stated that the Chamber of Commerce had been asked to supply the Council with some information as (to whether there was any possibility of the poll being carTied. 'IMs information had never been supplied. The Council was not very hopeful, of a poll being earned, tut there could be no objection to taking a poll on the day of, the municipal elections. Crs Morris and Ewington, held that it would kill the. whole matter to take a poll of the whole of the Borough, ratepayers. The Mayor moved (that the matter be placed before the ratepayers at the coming municipal elections. Cr Prentice seconded the motion, saying that any work that benefitted the town, should be home by the whole of the Borough. The motion was carried. .
