NEGOTIATIONS FOR PURCHASE

(Received February 28, 9.30 a.m.)

SYDNEY, February 28. Stock-selling agents were not communicative when questioned . regarding the prospects of the American Meat Combine operating in Australia. They admitted that representatives of the Combine attended sales, also that they had been negotiating for the purchase of at least one meat company. The representatives are spoken of as Swifts, but, it is understood, really represent, the combined meat packers of America, with a capital of forty million pounds. Present operations appear to be confined to purchasing preserved mutton and beef. MELBOURNE, February 28. Mr Tudor, Minister for Trade and Customs, has stated that he has learned on good authority that the Trust is trying to dispose of some of its. shares in ; Australia, with .the, object of getting important Australians into the Trust, so as to secure a firm footing in Australia.
