CARTERTON
Recently Messrs Grave (Oamarn), Little (Gore), and Talbot (Greymouth), the latter well-known in Carterton, at. one tiriie being assistant master at the school here, returned from an exploration of Fiordland extending over three weeks. They succeeded in finding a ■ nracticable route from ■ Milford to Wakatipu. The route was really discovered last year, but on this occasion a new track was found'aver Grave's Pass, cutting 1200 ft off .the . ascent = and removing other difficulties. The Pass rises to a height of 5000 ft. By, the. new route the tourist journey from Te; Arnit to Milford, then by j Grave's route to Lake Howden. and joining the Greenstone,route to Wakatipu affords magnificent views of overland moinitai'nseenety,notably Mt. Tukoko, rising to a height of 9042 ft, practically from the' sea level. . The party ascended the summitof : , v Mt>:< Bal loon,; 6000 f t, This ' Was ' the .first tjiipe the mountain' had been attacked \from the northern ridge,, arid proved a somewhat hazardous undertaking, the surface comprising loose rock t<ia great extent. The ascent and descent were made in one day. •„ The local branch of the Wairarapa ■: Egg Circle has been advised that last , .week's consignment realised Is .(3d a dozen. ■ .
