MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. TJio following is the report of the County Engineer, which was read at the monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council held yesterday:—' Opaki Riding. Pairau Swamp— Contract No. 240, metalling repairs and formation. The above work is now reported complete bv the contractor. Ruamahanga Valley Road.—(Government grant £50): The construction of the culvert and embankment har; been executed by the Council's staff. An additional improvement has been made bv reconstructing 3 chains of formation, the material from which was used in constructing the embankment. The formation and metalling of 12 chains on the Matahiwi road, terminating at the mill gate, has been completed. Kn *™ Approach. Contract i\o. 238, formation etc. : The contractors are continuing to make fair progress; a heavy block of the work between. Bridge No. 2 and Ewington's corner is well on towards completion. Contract No. 2.37. Building two bridges: About one half of four of the piers has been laid in the rough and the contractor is-proceeding to get the foundations for the remaining throe, which is a slow operation. Ihey have, however, a pump of sufficient capacity to cope with the water | when an efficient well provision for the drainage of the pier has been I made. Matahiwi Road.— I am requested by Mr Holmes' surveyor, Mr A. P. Rnwson, to inspect and pass on behalf of the Council that portion of the new road through the Matahiwi Estate which Mr Holmes interviewed the Council about some time ago, with the object of having it made a, public road. I understand that Mr Holmes has satisfied the Council with regard to the dedication of the branch line. I ask the Council's instruction as to whether I shall make a final inspection to take the road over, if properly constructed, on their behalf. • Rangitumau Riding. Kaka-amu Road.—Contract No. 244 (Government Grant): 90 "chains of metalling. The above work was finished on sth inst., The contractor has yet to maintain the work for a month. While the contractor was on the ground I took the opportunity of letting to him the supply of 150 cubic yards' of metal for repairing the weaker portions of the road between Messrs R. Wilton's and Kjes'trup's sections. Tenders are also called for repairs to tho> weaker portions of the Wangaohu Road. To Whiti Riding. Mastei'tou-Gladsto'ne Road: The re-decking of the Te Whiti bridge bill be completed in the course of six or seven days. Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road.— Contract. No. 246,. 2 miles 18 chains of metalling. The contractor has about 12 chains of metal laid. Wainuioru Riding. Blairlogie-East Coast Road.—Contract No. 243, delivering 1270 cubic yards of metal. Birkett's to Kohiwai section of 'the road has been completed. Masterton-Waimata Road.— Con-tract-No. 241, delivering 1500 cubic } yards of metal:, The contractor reports that the Kahumingi and Rorokoko section of the work is done; he has now shifted camp to the northern end. Brancepeth Road.— Contract.. No. 240 a, 21 chains of metalling and delivering 750 cubic yards of metal for repairs. The above contract was completed on the 16th ult. Upper Taneru Riding. Mangarai Road, Contract No. 230. —77 chains of formation and culverts : The contractor. reported the contract, completed on-the 10th inst. The same contractor being the successful tenderer for the next "half 1 mile on above road, will proceed with the new work immediately. Contract No. 231.—Building a 71 j fee* span bridge: I inspected the bridge on the 28th ult., and found the work completed ■ with the omission of four bolts in the upper chords. I will have the defect remedied before the final payment is made. Tanglewood Road.— The strengtSening of the platform the j north end of the road has "Been eff- i ected and also additions have been I made of handrails to the 27ft span" at the foot of the hill. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road. -.Metalling repairs are being effected to the weaker portions of the road north of mile peg 11. A-start has been made with the substitution of culverts for the defective bridges on Wrigley's Flat. T beg to recommend ', that the painting of the Glendonald bridge be undertaken this season; .-there is a balance of the loan available to defray the cost. J ■'■ Wairere Road (Government grant) —I have made a survey of the unformed ; part of the Glendonald-Wai-rere Road--68 chains— and have submitted ithe plans to the Public Works Department . Alfredton Riding. Alfredton-Web'er Road.—Delivering 900 cubic yards of metal, Contract No. 245. .The contractor has been on the ground for the past three weeks, and has done some of the short hauling. Contract No. 242. Tawataia to Alfredton section, delivering 890 cubic vards of metal: The contractor is making steady progress with his work. Building Roadman's Cottage at Waterfalls:— Contract No. 239: The building was framed and covered, on my visit of inspection on the 4th inst. A small quantity of timber was necessary for the completion of , the work. Willow Nuisance.— Notices' have been served in accordance with the Council's directions, and very little action has resulted. The season is. now well advanced, and" it will soon be too Jate to prosecute ihe jvork with satisfactory results. •
