BARTON'S CIRCUS.
The popularity of the circus was again demonstrated last night, when the seating accommodation of Messrs Barton Bros.' spacious marquee was taxed to the utmost. The entertainment was of a varied and included-artists from throughout;. Australasia. A feature of,the evening was; the - perforinalice by local - riders in the steeplechase. The winner (Mr George Dean) received a well-earned prize, he having led the field Another volunteer event was the attempt to a-ide the pony "Barny." The only competitor (Mr Adams) succeeded in getting no closer than arm's reach of the animal. A sparkling event was the/, rope manipulating by Captain M. McLeod, who received a great ovation. The .final performance will be ' given this evening, when a complete ! change of programme wi'H .be' sub- | mitted. Among the events : will be j the riding of "Sandfly,'' the notor- i ious Australian - buck-jumper,' by' Masterton equestrians, foi- which a substantial .prize is offered. 'The music will again be rendered by Barton's Brass Band. The situation of the circus is next, -to Hunter's , bakery, in Queen Street South. :
