The Australian mail steamer Boveric, the late arrival of which from San Francisco had caused some anxiety, reached port this morning. From the time the vessel left San Francisco she was. beset with tempestuous weather. In the latter half of the journey, after, leaving Samoa, the officers had, an experience the .memory of which will remain lifelong. After encountering a hurricane for twelve days, the officers were forced ' to broach cargo and tear jup the fittings of the vessel to supply fuel for the furnaces, the coal supply having run. short. The cargo fortunately consisted chiefly of timber for Auckland and Australia. A large quantity of laths from the Auckland, cargo was burned, and the Sydney cargo was also used, though in much leas' quantities. ■ ' The five days' trip from Samoa oc- ! cupied twelve days. The Boveric left Apia on January 31st. She soon encountered a heavy gale, and when four days out she, ran into - a hurricane or cyclone. Great seas 'swept over the decks. In a deluge of rain, the Boveric hove to all night. The storm sail was blown to ribbons, and another which replaced it shared the same fate. I The deck cargo had to be freshly i lashed on several occasions, which was a most perilous task, with great j seas swirling across the decks. On Monday the hurricane ended, and though a 'Strong gale continued the voyage was resumed. The coal .running short, the call at Tonga was dropped, and the bad weather continued. To save coal, it was- determined to use up the wooden fittings in the Vessel. When all these were gone, ■recourse was had to the cargo.
