A MISSING PARTY.
THE PERILS OF PAPUA. (Received Last Night, 11.25 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, February 13. Anxiety is fek concerning th«» absence of Mr' Star, if ore Smith, Administrator at Papua, and a party comprising two white officers named Bell and Prat, twelve native police, and fourteen native carriers, who set out on November ISth last for the coalfields in the Western division of Pep'ua (which is very little known), to effect friendly relations with the natives, survey, and 'generally establish Government authority. .;-.;,. They'should. have'returned a month ago to the Fly river. On 'January 6th last the Government steamer Merrie England was there to meet them, and they waited till January 31st, but there were no signs of the Smith <party. The steamer then returned to Port Moresby for instructions. , Three search parties are preparing. It is considered that the delay is caused probably through illness, as the party was sufficiently strong to repel any ordinary attacks from the natives.
