AMOTION REJECTED. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT OPPOSED (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, February 11. The Labour Conference negatived a motion that Labour members of Parliament- should contribute? £lO annually to the funds of the Labour League in their respective electorates, together with 2J per cent, of the moneys received as members of Commissions. The Conference carried a motion that the Government should establish a.furniture'--factory for the manufacture of furniture required 1 for Government offices, aiso for the supply of wage-earners on the instalment plan. It also passed a motion affirming the desirableness of abolishing capital punislunent in favour of perpetual imprisonment. The mover of this resolution contended that hanging was no deterrent to crime. It was decided to send a deputation to. ask-the Minister for Mines to open up State coal mines. A motion for a Usury Bill, limiting the interest on money lent, was carried unanimously. It was decided that no persons should be eligible for selection as a Parliamentary candidate unless they have been members of a labour league or union for three- years; also that employers paying lesij than union wages should be disqualified as candidates.
