A MINISTER'S SON.

Complaint has been made by the "Railway Advocate," a paper published by the officers of the railway service, that a son of the Minister for Railways has been appointed" to a position as draughtsman in the service, which is said to carry with it a salary of £-100 per year. The Hon. J. A. Millar has explained that the appointment was made on the recommendation of his responsible officers, and without his being consulted in the matter. He has further stated that rather than allow his position in the Ministry to stand in the way of the advancement of his son, he would retire from the Cabinet. This is a vei-y honourable for the- Minister to pursue, though it is hardly what one would expect from a gentleman occupying a seat in the Cabinet. The country, when it accepts a Minister, does not necessarily agree to find positions for. hi* family. In the present instance, everything depends upon the qualifications of Mr Millar's son. If he is entitled to the position by reason of length of service and qualification, the fact of his father being' a Minister of the Crown should not stand In his way. If, on the other hand, there are others more entitled to the position than he, a grave injustice has been done in offering - him the, •appointment;. -
