THE LICENSING ACT.
A CARTERTON CASE. A case was. heard in the Magistrate's Court, at Cartei'ton, on Thursday. before Mr L. G. Reid, S.M., in which Annie Harbroe, licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, Carterton, was charged with permitting druikeimej? upon lie:' licensed premises. Constable Carmody prosecuted, and Mr C. ,A. Pownall appeared for the defence. At the close of the case for the prosecution, Mr Pownall asked for a dismissal, submitting that it Avas not sufficient to show that drunkenness had taken place upon the premises; but that it must also be proved that the licensee knew of it, and did not take reasonable step-, to prevent it. liis Worship concurred with this view, and dismissed the information.
