MAORI TANGIS.
A lot of crocodile tears are shed in and out of Parliament for the noble race of brown skin we call the Maori. Nobody, however, seems to have the courage to take him'by the hand and lead him out of his insanitary surroundings and away from the moth-eaiten superstitions of his ■' forefathers. The "tangi" over the dead is one of the custom* which every well-wisher of the Maori race should deprecate.- It takes men, women and children from their kiangas and farms into unhealthy surroundings, and causes them to neglect their health as well as their estate. There is no justification whatever for the nonsensical practice. When one hears of Native lands being over-run with rabbits, and going generally to the bad, while the owners are having a sustained "shivoo" over some departed relative, one wonders if there is such a thing in existence as a Native Department of State.
