Mr Maurice Pearce, a well-known settler at Ohakea, who was taken to Palmerston North last week to undergo an operation for an internal complaint, died on Tuesday. Mr W. A. Mr Stanley O'Neill, of the Standard Cold Storage Company, Johannes-; burg, is at present on a visit to Wellington. His mission is to arrange for regular supplies of New Zealand but- : ter and meat to South Africa. Sir Joseph Word told a Rotorua audience that he was now the senior Minister of the Crown in Australasia, and had almost completed a quarter of a century of Parliamentary work. The death is reported by the Ota go Daily Times of Mr John Simmons, of Hampden, at the age of 70 years. Ho was one of the miners who was allured frQm Australia in 1862. Duncan, the present member. : A very old resident of Pigeon Bay. Canterbury, Mr George M'Kay, died last week. He was born in Fifeshire; "Scotland, in 1844, and came to New \ Zealand with his parents in 1859 in ••-* the ship Cresswell. Deceased engaged in farming pursuits for many years,- and was a noted sheep breeder. Professor R. C. Maclaurin, formerly of. Victoria College, Wellington, now President of the Massachussets Institute of Technology, Boston, .U.S.A.. was the recipient of an honorary degree from Harvard University at the close of ; last academical year, and made a speech at a great gathering presided over by ex-Presi-dent Roosevelt. - Mr T. Ronayne, General Manager -of New Zealand Railways, accompanied by Messrs H. Buxton (Chief Traffic Manager), S. F. Whitcombo (Wellington District Traffic Manager), J. Burnett (Chief Engineer for Working Railways), A. L. Beattie (Chief Mechanical Engineer), F. Widdop (Inspecting Engineer), and W. Pearson (Locomotive Superintendent), arrived in Masterton by. special train last evening from Napier. They' return to Wellington this morning after their annual tour of inspection. A very pleasing function took place at the residence of Mr A. McLebd, Pine Street, last evening, when the employees of the municipal gasworks assembled to celebrate the wedding of one of the staff, Mr E; McCord. A r- lengthy toast list was gone through, the health) of the bride and brfde.groom being honoured in bumpers. The happy couple were the recipients of a beautiful marble clock, suitably inscribed. Numerous songs and recitations were contributed, a very harmonious evening concluding with all present wishing the happy couple every happiness and prosperity.
