DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own' Correspondents.')

CASTLEPOINT.

The Castlepoint races are over for ij another year, and many old identities from the Coast, who look forward to this meeting as the only day of the year to relievo the monotony of station life, will go, back to their wharfs to think over what might have happened if they had only known which horse would win the Cup. Racing, with all its glorious traditions and excitement, has its dark side and , regrets. The love of that most noble animal, the hcrse, is many a man's downfall, through not using it in a proper sporting spirit, as was evinced last Saturday by the number of protests entered. It is difficult to understand why men who class themselves as sportsmen, run to the rule book and try to get the stakes on some technical point, after being honestly'beat-en in competition. In the. Castlepoint Cupy the winner carried top weight, a, ■'• stone more .< than.the second'horse, and won easily. The. win was very popular,-Ridging- by ' the hearty cheering' for horsa r and ! rider, and yet the owner Has a. damper put on liis honest win by being protested against. There are good, conscientious sportsmen, and there are "others," and it is a pity that the "others" enter the. sporting arena.
