AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
MR J. BERRY'S PERFORMANCE. . The time of-9 4-sths seconds which Mi-;, J. Berry registered from scratch in the 100 yards ■ handicap at the Park Pete on Thursday, although equal to tho New Zealand record, will not receive official recognition ow'ng- to the fact that there were only two timekeepers, whereas three aire required before any record can be passed. However, this'does not detract from the merit of the performance and there is no doubt now that he will be selected as the Wellington representative in the at the New Zealand Championship meeting at Ohristchurch on. March 4th. Opie, of Canterbury, is .looked upon as a certain winner of this event, and the fact that. he beat Berry at Wellington last month would seem to* point to this conclusr ion. However, in the 100 yards event at Wellington, Berry was at a decided disadvantage, having just previously won the heat and final of the 75 yards handicap, whilst Opie was perfectly fresh, not having run earlier in the day. Berry has undoubtedly improved since his run at Wellington, and his prospects against Opie when they meet in tho N.Z. Championship are decidedly bright.
