SPORTING.
TURF NOTES. (By ''Zetland.") Nominations for the Woodville meeting close to-night, 1 at 8 o'clock. The Whakataki races are, being held to-day. A fair number of Masterton sportsmen journeyed through this morning, principally per medium of motor cars. That 'brilliant sprinter, Obsono, was purchased as a yearling for 27 guineas. ■■'. •:■■-.; - . / '."• ■ Rurik, who ran a dead heat . for firs;t place in the Newmarket Hack at Pahiatua, and won the Makuri Hack on Thursday, is a full brother to those line performers Petrovna, Master Alix and Tsarltza. As he ! can still be improved in condition he should increase his winning score shortly. Last year the Pahiatua Club put:, through the' totalisator ~ only, about £6400. This year the sum of £14,401 was recorded,' ah increase of about £BOOO. As the Club claims about six per cent, on the invest; ments the amount of tlie increase represents what would have been received from twelve bookmakers each day at the full fee of £2O. Now that tlie bookmakers are "ruled off" the totalisator receipts at all meetings are sure to.be increased, but perhaps not, so materially as evidenced at Pahiatua.
The biggest dividend at the rahiatua meeting was paid out on Tulloch Ard, whose. Masterton owner, is reported to have had a good win. The Lethe gelding is trained at Clareville, and his sprinting ability had not .been boomed far and wide.
It was reported tins week that, the well-known performer, The Latk, had broken his leg while in training. ,It now appears that the injury is not so bad as state'd, and there is hope of the horse being all right in due course.
The steeplechase horse, Eurus, has been put into work at Biccarton in view of winter racing. Last year his preparation was hurried, but evidently the same mistake is not to be made this time.
The representatives of descendants of the great English horse, St. Simon, have won since the year 1889 the enormous amount of £546,915.
Lady Lucy is doing satisfactory work at Flemington. Crucinella is reported to have struck form, so these two: New Zealand representatives may show to advantage in the near future.
