STORMY DEBATE

AT THE SYDNEY CONFERENCE. ON THE FEDERAL REFERENDA. (Received February 3, 9.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 3. At a meeting of the Opposition Party it was resolved to oppose the Federal, referenda. The Labour Conference had a stormy debate on a motion demanding that the State Labour, members should fall into line on the referenda or leave the movement. Eventually the following amendment was carried : "That the Conference having by an overwhelming majority decided to support the referenda, trusts to the loyalty of the Labour Party to respect the decision of the Conference." Mr Holman, Attorney-General, gave an assurance that the State Government would not oppose the wishes of the Conference.
