BORIC ACID.
AX, IMPORTANT DISCOVERY. A * very important discovery lias, -been announced by Dr Klein, the celebrated chemical expert of St! Bartholomew's Hospital, viz., that boracic acid kills the ptomaine germ. British provision merchants have been much bothered this year by the appearance of cases of ptomaine poisoning in various parts of the country. Dr Klein's discovery will be welcomed. There is some chance (a London correspondent writes) of securing a tit standard for the use of preservative! It ought to have been done long ago,' especially with the report of. a departmental committee all ready to iiand. .-...' In view of several European countries and the United States of America also prohibiting the importation of butter containing boric, the above information should be of eon/ siderable interest jto-those engaged in the dairying industry iii Australasia, especially as in order to preserve its quality during the' long Journey to the United Kingdom, butter shipped from the Commonwealth and New Zealand almost invariably contains a small percentage of boric acid.
