In spite of the ominous: -clouds which gathered on Wednesday - and hung over the township until well into the night, providence, was .kind .to the.. Masterton tark Beautifying Committee, and Thursday broke delightfully fine. The result was that the Fete in the Park was in every way successful. The attendance of the public during the afternoon was very large, and a very interesting , programme of events was got off. The whole of the arrangements for the gathering were complete, and the events were put through well to time. Thanks to the efforts of the' police, the Boy Scouts and the Fire SPolice, there was no or crowding on to the Oval, and everything passed off without a hitch. Possibly the most pleasing event in the afternoon was a Maori haka by a dozen natives, under the chieftainship of Mr Puhara Te Tau. ' The Maoris were got up in the aboriginal war; paint, and went through a number of evolutions and' gesticulations which created rounds -of applause. Considerable- interest was taken in the various competitions anil running; events, and numerous- races , were provided for the ypungbtera. The bahy jstiqw'' prodiicec}. keeii; competition, and the judges (who happened to be a quartette of ladies) had no easy task to perform. The Battalion Band rendered a choice programme of : ihusic, which was much.enjoyed. TEe Swimming events proved "a pleasant "diversion, and there were some very good finishes. The Park, which was brilliantly illuminated 1 with arc-lamps, Chinese

was a scene of great animation in the evening. Hundreds of people assembled together to witness the attractive picture entertainment by Messrs Thompson and Payne, the fireworks display by Mr Z. M. Hoar, the basKet-ball exhibition, the Maori haka, etc. The latter event created much interest and amusement, and the Natives deserve credit for their splendid performance. The basketball match, which attracted a good deal of attention, was won by the team of the "Yellows." Four teams competed in the tug of war, which, after a. vigorous tussle, was won by a teanv of Natives headed by Moana Paratene. The orchestral selections, by an orchestra led by Mr Candy, were very much appreciated, as was also the trombone solo of Mr Hutchinson. Pleasing selections of music were also rendered at intervals by the Battalion Band and Mastorton South Band. The decorated boats looked very pretty on the lake, but the result of the judging was not available last night. The gathering, altogether, was orderly -and enjoyable.
