The Hon. James Carroll is at present onia fortnight's visit to his own electorate —Gisborne.
Mr H. Sutton has been appointed •clerk of the " Castlepoint County Council. The office was left vacant by the death of the late Mr McHutchon.
The organiser of the Opposition Party, Mr R. R. Martin, arrived in Masterton yesterday. He will remain in the district for a day or two.
Mr Laver, the well-known Australian cricketer, who has been operated on for appendicitis, is progressing favourably.
Miss Rosalie Handley, who has been teaching music and singing, in Masterton' fpr some months past, and who is well and favourably known in the Hawke's Bay, intends following her profession in Napier at an early date.
Mr A. J. P. Hathaway has been appointed sub-agent for the Livs Stock 'and Accident branch of the Standard Insurance Company, Ltd., of New Zealand.
Lord Wintei'stoke, a director of the Great Western Railway Company and a member of several public bodies at Bristol, has died"at the age of 81 years. Deceased was also chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, Ltd.
A cable announces the death of Mr John McWhirter, R.A. Mr McWliirter, who studied at Peebles at the Edinburgh School of Art, was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1864, and of the Royal Academy in 1894. Scotch . subjects and scenery were his favour themes.
Advice from New York states that Mrs Elizabeth Phelp Ward,' the American authoress, has passed away at the age of 67 years. Deceased, who was a daughter of the Rev. Austin and Elizabeth Smart Phelps, began to write for the Press when thirteen years old. She was the author of "Tlie Gates Ajar," "The Gipsy Series " (four vols.), "Men, Women and Ghosts," and many other works. She married Mr A. D. Ward in 1888.
Mr J. I). Cruickshank, who has for the past twenty years been one of the most prominent and deservedly popular citizens of the town, has decided to eofrimence business in the Empire City as a produce broker and commission agent. Inuring his residence in Masterton Mr Cruickshank has always taken a keen interest in all public affairs' and any. movement that made for the progress of the town and district has always had his hearty support. An enthusiastic member of the Masterton A. and P. Association, Mr Cruickshank has been of valuable assistance to the institution during his fifteen years' association with it, having been twice presidene and several times vice-president of that body. In addition to having been a prominent member of the local Chamber of Commerce and Employeds' Association, he took a very keen interest in the movement to secure the continuous telephone service for this town. Mr Cruickshank will carry with him the best wishes of a large circle of friends for his future success in his new sphere of business. He will leave Masterton for Wellington this week.
