CARRIED OUT TO SEA.

FOUR MEN DROWNED

(Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.)

SYDNEY, January 28. A sensational incident occurred on the Coogee Beach to-day. Six women and five men were bathing in the surf, when they were carried out to sea.

The whole of the women and one of the men were rescued. The others were drowned, their names being Joseph McGrath, George Macks, Sydney Hardy and Wilson. The recent rains had formed a channel m which a strong current was running, " - The sea was very rough, and there was a strong under-current, especially in the channel, which had been scooped out by. the rush of water from the storm. When the bathers got into this they were quickly carried out to sea.

The rescuers did excellent work, . one, named Harold Baker, being es- j pecially prominent in saving several, ■ although he was fully dressed. One of the victims was brought to shallow water and told to run on to the beach.

In his fear he fell down again and was taken out drowned.

A woman struggled with her rescuers, one of whom was forced to strike tl>e girl to avoid hindrance.

It is believed that a fifth- man was drowned in the Coogee Beach disaster, as some men's clothing, found on the rocky, has not been claimed.
