WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE.

A DEMAND REFUSED

Received This Morning, 12.30 o'clock

MELBOURNE, January 29.

The wharf labourers engaged in connection with the steamers Marloo and Arawatta struck work, demanding fourpence per hour extra for handling cement and superphosphates. The Company granted the extra pay, but refused to include it in an agreement. Other wharf labourers joined the strike, and all except those engaged at timber vessels are idle. .

LATER PARTICOLARS.

THE MASTERS SIT TIGHT,

Received This Morning, 12.40 o'clock

MELBOURNE, January 29. About six hundred men are affected by the strike. The men thought that cement and superphosphates were included in the list of special cargoes for which extra payment was provided; but when they got the list they found they were not.

The masters refuse to include them in the list, although willing to pay the increase now.

The masters say they intend to sit 'back until the men resume.
