He was a son of the late Mr William Lyon, the founder of the firm of Lyon and Blair, and was for some years in partnership with Mr Blair. He became secretary of the Wellington Racing Club in 1879, but resigned in 1880, when he was appointed secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board. This position he occupied for five years, during which period he was a steward of the Racing Club. In 1885 he again became secretary of the Racing Club, and held this position until a few years back, when he resigned and became secretary of the Underwriters' Association. For several years past he had been in indifferent health. "Horry" Lyon was a well-known and popular figure in Wellington, and it was a tragic circumstance that he should have met his death when attending the meeting of a club with which he was so long identified.]
