MR HOGG CRITICISED.
In the course of his address at Eketahuna on Friday night, the member for Masterton complained that lie had been unfairly criticised by the local Press. So far as the Age is. concerned, there can be no ground for complaint. Mr Hogg has been criticised as a public man, and as that alone. No attempt has been made by this paper to treat him unfairly, and no attempt will be made. But the time has come for plain speaking, and Mr Hogg must be told that he cannot play ducks and drakes with his constituents, even though. it be .;to > propitiat«.. hisiown' pefc theories, which he has been pleased to denominate principles. If he flouts public opinion, ..and violates .the trjistjreposed in him, he, must put up with the consequences. The people cannot be expected to allow sympathy for ever to stand between; themselves and their best interests-.
