APPEAL TO THE CHAMBER OF . COMMERCE. NO FUNDS FOR T$E PURPOSE. ;.-• At the meeting of tlie'Cpuncil of, the 'MastertGn" Chamber pf Commerce yesterday, a letter wait read from the Park Beautifying Committee, requesting a donation towards the-prize. fund for the #ark Fete. ■ Mr Henderson thought that the might contribute a guinea. r Mr Chennells did not think the Cha-mber should be called upon to Contribute towards this fund. The subscribed a sum of money .anmtalry to further the interests of >i ,.M(H<Swn* and district, and he did riot | think they should allow their funds to dribble away in this fashion. The members of the Chamber were subscribing privately towards the Park Beautifying Fund, and this appeared to be an attempt, to make them pay twice. He was of opinion that they should conserve their funds, with v view to providing a suitable meetingroom. Mr Daniell thought-that if the Park was going to be. a commercial benefit to the town they should subscribe towards it. Mr Cbennells stated that he was in no way opposed to the Park. He was quite in favour of improving it. He did not think, however, that the Chamber should be asked to contribute. He was willing, as an indit vidua I, to contribute his quota privately. j Mr Henderson, who had moved that | the Chamber contribute a sum of £1 Is to the fund, stated that he was not I desirous of establishing a wrong principle. j Mr Chennells quoted the experience I of himself and others iu regard to the Hospital funds. Mr R. Brown,seconded'the resolution of Mr Henderson that a sum of' j £1 Is be voted; but, on the motion beI ing put, it was lost 021 a show of hand/s.
