LONDON WOOL SALES. By Telegraph —Pvcss Awicialiuii. (Received Thursday, at S a.m.) LONDON, .January 18. At the wool sales, 9633 bales were offered. There was an excellent selection and a large attendance of buyers and-a very strong home competition. Continental buyers were quiet. American buyers ysive slight support to good merinos at five per cent, lielow December closing rates. Faulty, fully ten per cent. ; medium coarse crossbreds, seven and a half per cent, decline. LATKR. Wool sales are active. Home buyers are operating keenly at the opening rates. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Commerce and Tourists Division of the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists, have received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 17th, regarding the opening of the first series of the colonial wool sales:—"The wool sales have commenced with a large attendance of. buyers. Competition is confined to Home manufacturers chiefly, whose trade- is good. America and the Continent are holding off to ascertain the market value. ' A large supply ' of crossbred wool is being offered. Fifty-eight thousand eight hundred bales of New Zealand.wool are. catalogued. Fine wool is id, and medium and Course %d less than last sale. ' "The estimated" values of New Zealand wool'at the close of the' sixth series of the colonial wool sales held in London on December 0, 1910, were as follows: —Superior merino. Is Id to Is 3jd; medium merino to Is inferior merino, to U\d; fine crossbreds (all grades). Is Hd to ls4d;, medium crossbreds. lid to Is Id; coarse crossbreds (all grades) G-kl to lOkl." ' PRIVATE CABLED REPORTS. I Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London office, dated January 17, in regard to the opening of the sales: —"Wool sales: Attendance of buyer;; generally is large,..good selection 'oi wools, and. competition animated. Merino wools of good quality and condition, 5 per cent, lower ; merino wools of other descriptions, 7f to 10, per cent lower; crossbred wools, fine quality, nothing offered •; crossbred wools of medium and coarse quality, 7J- p?r cent lower." Messrs -Abraham and Williams, Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, under date January 17th:—"The sales have opened with fair competition from a .large attendance of buyers, Americans, however, being absent. PALMERSTON N.,. Last Night. Messrs 'Abraham and Williams. Ltd., report:—At our Palmerston N. sale to-day, we had a .fair yarding of sheep and a. heavys.yarding of cattle. Sheep sold well, every lot being, dis-posed-of at late rates. The cattle were in good demand, very little going out unsold. 'We quote: Sheep: Woolly lambs, 9s Gd to lis 3d, 2-tooth wethers lis lid to 12s 3d. Cattle: 2 tb-2fr-yeai; steers, £5; fat bullocks, £7 10s; fat cows, £4 to £5 6s;: forward cows, £3 to £4 15s; weaners, 20s, 345, 355, to £2 10s; bulls,; £3 to £4. PAHIATUASTOCK SALE. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd,, report, as follows.: —We submitted a full yarding of sheep and a moderate yarding of cattle to a good attendance of buyers. The bulk of the sheep were aged ewes and "medium lambs, which met practically no enquiry; good rape'lambs and Wethers, however, sold well. Cattle sold well at late rates, practically everything 'changing, hands. Quotations: —4tooth wethers 12s 9d to 13s 4d; small wethers, 8s to 10s Id; sound mouth ewes, 9s 6d to. 12s" JOd; full mouth ewes, 7s 4d to 9s Id ; good rape lambs. 9s 2d to 10s 9d for a particularly good line of shorn lambs. Ltd., report on their Masterton Stock Sale held on Wednesday as follows: — We had a heavy yarding of sheep of various sorts including several good lots of ewes and wethers, upwards of 5000 head being submitted. We also yarded two hundred head of cattle, and there was a large attendance of the public. Sheep were in keen demand and met a particularly spirited sale, business at auction being animated throughout, practically a total clearance resulting, young ewes, good rape lambs and cull lambs being keenly sought after at prices considerably in excess of vet)dors expectations. Cattle did not sell as well as at recent sales. We yarded one or two pens of nice bullocks on behalf of Mr A. J/ Stone-Wigg, Te Parae, the top end making £6 9s, and others £5 19s.
