NITROGEN IN PLANT LIFE.
The use of nitro-baeterine, or the bacteria resultant from compound nitrogen, in the propagation of plant life, has gone beyond the region of experiment. It has entered largely into modern agricultural pursuits, and, as its utility a;id cheapness be r , come better known,' it -prill be regarded as indispensable to successful farming. It is surprising how few -people have a knowledge of the marvellous effect fzjordisod : by microorganisms upon the soil," and of the process of assimilation and dissemination of the nitrogenous elements in the atmosphere by these bacteria. It has been definitely established that plant-life thrives with the freo admission of nitrogen to the soil, and the experiments of Professor Bothamley have demonstrated the fixation of this important .element in animal and vegetable life to bacteria . The use.of nitro-bacterine on farms in the neighbourhood of Masterton has had a most wholesome effect.
