TURF NOTES. (.By "Zetland.") Althougli the .Shannon Racing Club has been granted a license by the Minister of Internal Affairs, it has decided not to hold a meeting this year. r J'his decision has been, arrived at as the bookmakers will not be able to ply their'callings after this month. The acceptances for the Wellington Cup are not satisfactory in ins .matter of number, only ten remaining in the race out of thirty-seven handicapped. ' ,The fact of Miss Mischief, who holds the Nert' Zealand record for a mile and a half, being in at 7st :1.31b, has apparently frightened, out the majority; of entrants, but as the- Greenwood stable also has Lady : Reina to represent it there is no certainty which will s«o the post. Los Angclos has been doing excellent work at Riccarton, Goldfmder ran really good races at Ellerslie, and Merrivoma won both the Manawatu and Rangitikoi Cups. Iranui is training on satisfactorily, and Vi, 6st. 131b,' may get to the end of the journey. Mendip 7st 31b has a handy weight, and should therefore be capable of galloping a mile and a half. So far Penza has not shown anything in public to warrant her chance being considered a likely one. Although the field will be small the race may be a well contested one, and if Miss' Mischief attempts her runaway tactics as in Auckland, one of the, light weights will doubtless go to the front with her, and the spectators at Trentham will witness a fast.race. . The Telegraph Handicap has drawn an acceptance of sixteen, and the list includes several speedy sprinters'.. Dearest, the full sister to Master Soult, is the ruling favourite, but Full Rate, Gold Lace, Maori King, Gipsy Belle, Sea Queen, Obsono, Formless, and Merrie Frank are s'uro to have plenty of backers on. the day. The Pahiatua Racing Club will be the first in the Dominion to hold a meeting -without the assistance of the bookmaking fraternity, since the passing of the "Gaming Act Amendment" of last session. It will be interesting to note the difference in the totalisator figures when the totals are made up and compared with those of last vear.
