ROMNEY MARSH SHEEP.
IN KEEN. REQUEST. At no time in the history i. the North Island has there been ■., keen a demand among pastoralists for the Romney Marsh breed of sheep as at present. The demand, in fact, is greater than the supply. The reasons .which have induced this demand need not be discussed, so many and varied are they. Naturally the breeder is looking about for. that type of sheep which combines constitution with the-wool-producing qualities; this-con-nection the forthcoming show, in Mastertbn, to be. held on. February, 14th and, 15tii, will afford breeders possibly.. the best opportunity yet presented in the Dominion of comparing the various types and judging as to quality. Some of the finest stud sheep penned this side of the Line are likely to be on exhibition. A silver cup, valued at twenty-five. guineas, has been offered by Messrs W. and H. Beethara, of Brancepeth, for the best pen of four Romney rams under twonty-one months. This has to be Avon three times in succession, and is at present . in the hands of Mr W. Perry. Will it be retained in the Wairarapa, or will it go to Rangitikei, or Manawatu, orHawke'sßay? That is the question which will be decided next month. In addition to this trophy, a silver salver, valued at twenty. guiuo:is, is offered for the best Romney ram under twenty-one months, and the Romney Marsh Sheep-breeders' Association offer a shield for the champion ram and ewe respectively. There are ten classes in all open to competition. , Entries close on Saturday, January 28th.
