Each district of. importance has' now its own pastoral and agriV j cultural Society, which serves, not •. only to excite competition among the; breeders of the respective districts, • but, in the opinion of many, to. bringV out latent thus act'" as a feeder to the more important exhibitions. Whatever else these ;• societies may do, they provide a" .healthy re-union for the settlers and a convincing ground for those who have hitherto refrained from- patronising the more ; pretentiousgrounds. Waipukuran,. 'a"rising cen- . tre in Hawke's Bay, is the latest to fall into, line. The settlers of thisdistrict have formed'" a strohgj. healthy- Society among themselves, and, are holding their first show on the local racecourse on February Ist.. The programme is of a comprehensive character, and comprises special classes for fat lambs and sheep, to say nothing of jumping competitions for .which valuable prizes are offered. Entries c)o'se on January 18th, and forms may be obtained on application to the secretary, Mr 1\ 'S. Carroll.
