TOWN HALL LIGHTING.
ELECTRICITY v. GAS. The following letter was read at last night's meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust:—"! have*: read ..with great interest; the ideas and schemes - advanced for the efficient lighting of the stage in the Town Hall. I would like to offer a few facts, which may be of use in deciding the question of electricity v. gas. With all due respect to Mr Blackmail's high pressure gas scheme, lean say from actual, experience that the most efficient gas service in existence cannot compare "with electricity for stage effects. As a,practical scenic artist I may state that the scenery is painted riow-a-days to s,uit electric light, and without the', necessary coloured globes the effect desired vis entirely lost. When using gas, the moonlight. and night effects have to be obtained,.or rather attempted, by turning down j the; whereas with electric ligfib a simple change-over switch gives an , instant change from white to a- blue or green, with no palpable loss of stage light, only change of colour. Certain scenes need a red light, and : therefore aii electric installation in circuits of three colours (which, by the way, costs no more than white light, only) gives the stage manager all ; the light effect necessary for modern, stage purpose;?. These effects are impossible kind of, gas-Vservice," and electricity■' is and-more quickly ■coatrolled'.-' If reduction in intensity of light, is required, simple diijsiwrs, such as those used in the 0 r."a House, Wellington, are quickly and easily made, out of an ordinary earthenware umbrella stand and two short lengtns of wire fitted w|th>leacl or copper .plates, an installation of ' which j would certainly be an acquisition. I: have studied the size of■' the hall,:, with stage, ,and I estimate that a dynamo giving 100 amperes at 100, volts would give an adequate output to meet all -requirements. Hoping ihis;wiil be read in the spirit it is, Offered.—l am," etc., . S., J. PEAR- ■ SON (late Scenic Artist, Mechanician, and Electi-yami for Jc.r.i. and Sons)."
Mr T. Wagg moved, and Mr R. Krahagen- seconded, that the letter be received, that Mr Pearson .be thanked,v.and that the communication be referred to the lighting committee. ;. ..:'■:_.-'. .
.'Mr. J. W, Blackmail wrote stating, that he was awaitiiig some informawhich was necessary before presenting his/report with regard to the lighting of the Town .Hall with gas. On the motion of Mr 0. Pragnell, it was decided to authorise the committee to call a. special meeting for the-purpose of considering the matter of the Town Hall lighting as soon as sufficient data is to hand.
