YESTERDAY'S CABLES.
At the Science Congress at Sydney, Professor Benlnim contributed an interesting paper on a zoological expedition to the sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand in 1907, chiefly the Auckland and the Campbell Islands, lie pointed out the strong resemblance of the fauna and flora to New Zealand's, and explained it by the supposition that they were once connected. Professor Farr, a New Zealander, read a paper on '.'Fish and Artesian Water." Several firemen are dead or missing in a fire which destroyed the Chamber of Commerce at Cincinnati (Ohio). Forty occupants were rescued. In the adjoining flat a banquet was progressing, but the guests escape uninjured. The roof collapsed and overwhelmed the firemen. President Taft referring to the Sims incident, said officers speaking abroad must never use language indicating a lack of friendship towards other countries. Invidious comparisons must always be avoided. The Melbourne police are inquiring into the death of Stephen Moodie, father of Olive Moodie, who is awaiting trial for the inurder of her mother and sisters. Stephen died rather suddenly four years ago. James A. Farrell (Brooklyn) is appointed Ellis Corry's successor in the United States Steel Corporation. Two girls at Parinico (Sicily), jestingly disguised as brigands, duped a game keeper, who fired, killing one. and seriously injuring the other.
