CONTINUATION OF INQUIRY. FURTHER EVIDENCE. (Received Last Night, 8.15 o'clock.) LONDON, January 12. At the inquiry into the lo„ss of the liner War at ah, Captain Bidwell, Lund's Marine Superintendent, testified that after the first voyage the captain and officers eulogised _ the Waratah and made no complaints. Witness did not remember telling Lunds that the Waratah was less stable than the Geelong. Witness added: —"Captain Ilbery treated the rumours which were the subject of i conversation among Lunds' clerks as idle talk." Admiral Davics quoted Chief-engin-eer Hodder's letter, informing Shanks about the coaling at Sydney compelling the Captain twice to stop coaling because he was afraid of a possible list. The witness 6eclar?ci,thgt Captain Ilbery had told him nothing this. Mr Bidwell, continuing his evii dence, said he was unable to explain j why the ballast tanks were full on the ) first voyage,'and left empty on the second homeward trip to Durban. The depositions of Mr "Latimer, a tally-clerk in Sydney, giving the second officer's opinion that the Waratah had a deck too many; of the Sydney pilots informing Captain Ilbery that the vessel was tender ; and of Lusakin, a steward, that a boatman had told him that the lifeboats were the most awful he had ever seen, were read. 1 Several witnesses, who were passengers by the steamer Tottenham corroborated their previous evidence about the bodies being seen. The third officer of the Tottenham ! said the captain enjoined silence in the matter, remarking tha't his owners would have a poor opinion of him if he bothered to pick up bodies and convey them to the nearest port when other vessels were specially searching for the Waratah. Mr Saunders, a atowaway, gave evidence that the behaviour of the Waratah scared him. He believed she was bound to topple over in a squall. Several other witnesses testified as to the comfort of the ship.
