Rifle shooting as a sport is decidedly on the up grade in the FortyMile Bush. The local clubs' prospects have never been brighter, as a number of young shots any beginning to show great improvers'.-n*/. A notable performance j:u'o rj by Mr. Grenville Rutherfvrl, o; Wairere, in practice recently. f-li& made 34 and 35 with two snecsssive 7-shot efforts at 200 yards, which is good enough for anything. Mr F. Maunsell, of Wangaehu Valley; has generously presented a handsome silver cup for the highestaggregate in this and next season's competitions, with a special request to the handicapper to give the 5 tyros' every encouragement. Captain R. F. Wilton is representing the Maurieeville Club at the Auckland Rifle Association meeting, while the secretary (Master R. A. Wilton) has just returned from Trentham, where he made his debut on the most tricky of all ranges, and succeeded in touching money... That generous Patron to the Mauriceville Club, Mr R. Cameron, has again presented bis usual three guineas, which, together with other trophies donated by liberal tradesmen, and the Dagg challenge shield, make up a prize list that many a larger Club might" envy. In view of the iirst trophy shoot which takes place on Saturday, 14th inst., the following scores were put up in practice on Saturday last, the first shoot .since Fairfield:—
On Saturday, 21st inst., the first 0f,:., a series of triangular matches takes place between the Alfredton, Tararua, 1 and Mauriceville teams of eight men. The highest aggregate of three matches (one ait each club's range) ..to hold a' handsome cup for the yea'V-j' It is tiie Clubs'' intention to send a tea fn to Trentham, a programme in all which will keep interest at a high pitch i.r: the rest of the season.
