THE LICENSING ACT.
Apparently the lestrictions under the recent amendments to the Licensing Act are more severe than was at first supposed. In the past it has been the habit of persons, with whisky or other, alcoholic beverages in their possession to repair to one of the many refreshment rooms in the town, and after procuring glasses .and .aerated waters, whicli'.were, paidv for, participate in a whisky and soda or a "shandy," as the case might be. This -custom, says the Mataura Ensign, has been temporarily stopped by order of the police, whose interpretation of the-Act-is-very much questioned, and it is more than probable that a test case will be brought forward at an early date in order to get a magisterial ruling on the point.
