As the result of the earthquake clefts three feet wide appeared in the ground at Vyemyi, the capital of a province in Asiatic Russia, in the neighbourhood of East Turkestan. Many demented people are searching for their relatives. Not a single house has escaped undamaged. As many as seven hundred families are homeless, and are sheltering in schools and barracks. Many, fearing a repetition of the shocks, pass the nights in the open air. The weather is intensely cold. The ground in the vicinity of Vyernyi in some places rose, and in others subsided.
