THIRD TEST MATCH SOUTH AFRICA v. AUSTRALIA. (Received Last Night, 5.50 o'clock.) ADELAIDE, January 8. The third test match began in cool weather. The teams were the same as at Melbourne, excepting that Hathorn replaced Pcarce. South Africa won the toss and Zulch and Sherwell opened the -in nings on a perfect wicket, to the bowling of Cotter and Whitty. The scoring was slow, and wheu lie was 12 Zulch was badly missed at short legby Macartney, off Whitty. When the score was 31 after 35 minutes' play, Armstrong relieved Cotter, and his second ball got Sherwell leg before. Zulch reached 50 in eighty minutes. At the luncheon adjournment the total stood at 98, Zulch 50 and Faulkner 30. Cotter and Whitty resumed the bowling, and the century occupied 88 minutes. Cotter's bowling was erratic and the runs came freely from it. Armstrong, relieved him at 129, and Macartney replaced Whitty. The batting was extremely sound, neither batsmen taking the slightest risk. .Faulkner's 50 occupied 95 minutes, and with the board showing 166,. Faiilkher lifted Armstrong to longoff, where Hill, running along the boundary, made a brilliant catch. Faulkner had batted stylishly and faultlessly for 105 minutes, hitting seven fours. Nourse began tediously. At 178 a double change, Kelleway and Cotter, was tried. After afternoon tea Cotter and Whitty were the bowlers, and the third ball of the hitter's first>over, Zulch skied to mid-off, and was easily caught. He had batted watchfully and patiently for 185 minutes, and had hit nine fours. Two hundred came up for ' 197 .minutes' play. Snooke was content to 'stay," while Llewellyn jogged along slowly. Cotter proved . harmless, so at 216 he handed the ball to Armstrong, and Kelleway was substituted for Whitty the next change. The two batsmen were shaping well, and runs came more merrily than at any previous time. Each had a big crack at Armstrong, and each time the ball fell just out of reach of Hill on the boundary. Ccttcr bowled again at ten to six. The batsmen played out time. The batting throughout lacked life, and every batsman was over-cautious, though on such a beautiful wicket more risks might have been taken. Apart from Macartney's chances, hone ■■■of which were really easy, the fielding* was' brilliant all day. The scores are as follows:—.
