WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

* ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING. - The thirty-fifth annual sports meeting- of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, held on the Masterton. Park Oval yesterday, was one of the most successful gatherings of its kind ever held in Masterton. The weather was delightfully fine, and tlie attendance, which constituted very nearly a record, showed how much the public appreciated the action of the society in again holding their sports on the Park Oval. The programme was very carefully compiled, and the events were all well filled, and drew the applause of the crowd. The amateur and professional- athletes were among the best of their class, and good finishes resulted. J. Johnson, of Carterton, was the most successful professional runner on the ground, while in the amateur events both Holder and Messenger put up good performances. The bicycle events, in which a considerable amount of interest was evinced, were both won by J. J. Meihana, in fine style. The wrestling and field events filled well, and the contestants had to exert themselves to be placed. One of the features of the meeting was the large number of people present in Highland costume. The piping and dancing were very good, and have improved considerably upon the standard of last year. The secretary (Mr W. Gillespie) and an energetic band of,. Directors had the arrangements of he meeting well in hand, and-left'nothing to be desired. The Masterton Municipal Band, under Bandmaster Hutchinson, supplied music during the afternoon.
