THE SCULLING MATCH.

PEARCE v. WEBB. Writing ot the sculling match "Victor," the well-known aquatic authority of the Wanganui Herald, says : "The most confident men on the winning side were Pearce and his friend, Mr C. Lyons, and they were probably the biggest winners. Mr G. Seifert, Pearce's backer, was not lacking in •faith in his man, but he was in the game for sport, and not to make monev, so did not speculate much, if anything. Mr W. R. Tuck was never more certain of victory, and he was prepared to back Webb for hundreds at evens, but no one would accomodate him/,v and so he saved hts money. Seen Vfter the race Pearce expressed his profuse thanks to Mr Seifert, who had so generously put up the money. "If it hadn't been for Mr Seifert," said Harry, "I should never have been here." Questioned as to how Pearce would shape alongside Arnst, Webb said: "Dick Arnst is a phenomenal man, stayer, and fast, -and when I was half a length ahead of Pearce, Dick would have been two, 'and he would never have come back. I don't think Dick need worry about Pearce." "Will you race again?" "Not I," said Webb, "I can't go on being beaten. A man must win sometimes. I'm awfully sorry to disappoint everybody." Pearce was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday as a guest of Seifert.
