AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.
NEXT TUESDAY'S SPORTS. The Wairarapa Amateur Athletic j Club's sports, to be held on Boxing Day (Tuesday next), promise to be an unqualified success. No finer collection of athletes has ever before been brought together at one sports meeting in the Wairarapa. Among the performers is W. A. Woodger, the present Australasian champion in the 100 yards and 220 yards events. Woodger, it will be remembered, broke the Australasian 100 yards record in .the Australasian Championship meeting held at Brisbane last year. His time for the distance was 9 4-5 seconds, i-uw,. of a second behind the world's record held by A. F. Duffy, of America. To see .this competitor alone should be well worth the price of admission. Woodger is an old member of the Club, and, it is needless to say, a great favourite locally. Another performer who will prove, a great attraction is H. A. Hubbard, of Wellington, the present New Zealand champion for the long jump. Hubbard will also bo competing in the hurdle events, in which ho has put up some sterling performances. Hubbard is the next best sprinter in Wellington ,and will be competing in the sprint events. risfier, a member of the local Club, is the exchampion of New Zealand for the 440 yards, and will be competing m this and the shorter events, merry's record as a professional sprinter was an exceptionally good one, and he will.. now be competing for the first time as an amateur. Mr W. L. Duiih, the Club's delegate on the Centre, who is a consistent performer in sprint events, will be also competing. Some of the young Masterton'members are going very wed, and some great races should take place. Prominent athletes from jl almerston North and Woodville are coming down, and are confident of raking back with them a fair share of trophies. Among the performers in the distance races, Baxter, of Wellington, stands out prominent. He is the best man in Wellington from 880 yards to two miles, and the Wellington athletes look upon him as the prospe- '"ive champion. Should the ex-char viou, Bradbury, of Masterton, strike his old form, great race.? will result in the 880 yards, one mile and two mile races. Another event that should excite great interest >s the- one mile walk handicap, which Mr Fleming Ross, the New Zealand ex-champion, is coming up from Wellington to judgo. Turner, of Wellington, an attractive exponent of the art of the effective use of the heel and toe, is scratch man. Among the other competitors in this event are Messrs Schofield and Collerton, of Tinui, who have been recently reinstated, and who have put up some excellent performances in walking events. In view of the forthcoming Fire Brigade championships at Hokitika, those brigades which intend competing are in active training, and welcomed an opportunity of gauging their skill against outside competition. Among the brigades which intend sending representatives may be mentioned Levin, Petone, the Hutt, Woodville, Carterton (two teams), Grey town and Masterton (two teams). All Fire Brigade events are under the r control of Superintendent Jenkins, who has had a large experience in conducting these contests, and the public may depend upon having the events placed before them in a very attractive manner. Taken altogether, the sports meeting to be held in the Public Park on Tuesday next (starting at ] p.m.) promise to be the most successful ever held in the district. During the afternoon, musical selections will be rendered by- the Masterton Municipal Brass" Band.
