A PECULAR CASE.
DETENTION OF A GIRL. i At the Central Police Court, Syd ney, on December Ist, an ivriusual case was investigated, when Thomas , Selwyn (29), described as an American, was charged with having unlawfully detained Cora Trevor, a girl of , 18 against her will. Accused for a remand for a week, in order ir.at | he might get a solicitor and obtain necessary witnesses. Sergeant Mankey said a week was too long. The girl's father was a poor man living in the country. He was in court ready to go on witii the case. Detective Hoski-3-son asked accused to tell him where the girl was, and turning to l heMagistrate the detective added, "He. won't tell me where the girl is, unless I .promise riot to tell hex father. The father is in court now, and wants to* know where she is." Accused declined to say where the fc girl was until he had consulted a solicitor. She had written twice to her father and had told him that rke would not go back; that she would sooner throw herself into the liar- f hour. The father of the girl sobbed . loudly when this statement was mado. I , Accused added that ho knew where ) > the girl was, and wanted to marry I her. He would bring her into Court, ! when he obtained a solicitor. Edward 1 Trevor said that it was not true that ' his daughter would rather throw herself into the harbour than go back. "Your Worship," he said, "she is my only child, and lam afraid that if a remand is granted, and accused gets bail, he will clear away with her, and I will never see her any more."_ Mr ! King granted a remand, but refused bail., Accused was informed-that if he tftld the police where the girl wv.s, , the question of bail would be reconsidered. In the event of his refusing to supply the information -lie would J have to stop in gaol. I
